Mesothelioma is a cancer affecting the linings of the lungs or abdomen often associated with the use of asbestos related products. Asbestos dust can work its way into the pleura when a person breathes in asbestos fibres. The pleura is the membrane which protects the lungs from damage by the ribs during the act of breathing. These dust particles often lay dormant for years before damaging the pleura’s cells, causing cancer.
